Webmate — The Agency That Turns Startup Chaos Into Managed Growth

In a world where technology companies are born faster than they can find their first customers, having a reliable marketing partner is no longer just an advantage — it becomes a matter of survival. Webmate is a full-cycle digital agency covering the entire spectrum of modern tech business needs: from SEO and PPC campaigns to animated video production and comprehensive technical audits. Over the years, the company has developed its own deeply analytical approach to marketing — one built not on gut instinct, but on data, systematic testing, and a genuine understanding of the real customer.

Founded in 2014 amid turbulence and a search for new markets, Webmate evolved from a small team breaking into the Kazakh digital marketing landscape into a fully-fledged Service Partner of Techosystem — one of Ukraine's leading technology ecosystems. Today, the agency serves both large corporations and the earliest-stage startups, understanding the unique needs of each.

As part of the Faces of Impact series, we spoke with Webmate's founder,
Yaroslav Yakovenko — a person who believes that marketing is not an expense but an investment, and that every startup conceals a unique advertising puzzle worth solving. His answers are candid, practical, and refreshingly free of marketing gloss.

Today, Webmate is a powerful digital services hub. But where did it all begin? What was that very "first drop" or unmet market need that drove you to create a full-cycle agency covering everything from development to complex promotion?Frankly speaking, Webmate didn't stem from a grandiose plan, but from a simple desire to make money.
Moreover, during that turbulent time, there was a strong wish to find opportunities for exporting services and earning foreign currency revenue. In 2014, a partner suggested combining my sales skills with his technical expertise to develop a new business in Kazakhstan.
We chose this specific direction because the Kazakh marketing services market was just taking shape—specialists in Google Ads and digital marketing were extremely scarce. Ukrainian professionals had a solid reputation as reliable and professional IT experts, which gave us a competitive edge.
A few years later, in 2016, as the Ukrainian economy began to grow, we decided to expand our operations into the Ukrainian market as well.

Your team works with a wide variety of tools, ranging from SEO to animation production. How do you define Webmate's "quality code"? What makes your approach unique in a sea of other marketing and dev agencies? Our approach is built on three core principles:
Close Client Alignment: We work hand-in-hand with the client, maintaining constant communication to truly understand their real needs and goals. Rapid Adaptation: We continuously research the best global marketing practices and strive to implement them internally as quickly as possible. Data over Intuition: This is the most crucial one—we drive everything with data, not gut feelings.
Before launching any advertising campaign, our analysts meticulously audit Google Analytics, forms, UTM tags, and conversion tracking systems. This ensures we optimize campaigns based on real metrics—such as cost per lead (CPL) and ROI—rather than vague impressions.
As for creative and content, we utilize AI tools to generate content sets whenever the client's rules and regulations permit. This way, we seamlessly blend creativity with hard analytics.

The digital world changes by the minute. How do you manage to balance the flexibility of a startup with the stability of a service partner who is responsible for the security and accessibility of client resources?Striking a balance between flexibility and stability is a truly challenging task. However, we achieve this through disciplined resource allocation and continuous team training.

First and foremost, we have a culture deeply rooted in FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)—we constantly monitor new approaches, case studies, and industry trends. We run a large number of tests for every client to uncover a unique approach and traffic source that will drive their growth.

At the same time, we are highly conservative when it comes to our clients' budgets:

70–80% of the budget is allocated to proven traffic sources.
20–30% of the budget is dedicated to experiments and testing new channels.

Regarding the security of client resources, we rely on Google-certified tools and additional security keys to protect data and guarantee platform uptime.

You are not just a member of the Techosystem community, but an official Service Partner. Why was it important for you to go beyond regular membership and offer special conditions? Is this more about business strategy or supporting "your own"?
Tech companies happen to be a major source of personal interest for me. On top of that, every startup and its marketing is a unique puzzle that is incredibly exciting to solve. Finding growth points means solving a complex problem.
Working with startups within the ecosystem is quite different from working with the traditional corporate sector. What specific "pain points" do you see most often among founders, and how do your audits (from Security to Usability) help them scale faster?
These two cohorts are indeed diametrically opposed.
The Corporate Sector: Typically has a clear strategy, vision, goals, and KPIs. Our role is to leverage our expertise to recommend effective advertising tools that fit their framework. However, we must operate strictly within specific policies and constraints.

Startups (especially early-stage): They are a frontier of bold ideas and rapid testing. They are all about the freedom to explore any channel to achieve scale. When that channel is finally discovered, it's pure magic—like winning the lottery.

To help startups achieve their goals, we conduct a series of audits, ranging from ad channel performance to usability. Each audit gives us a clear understanding of our exact starting point on the journey toward efficiency.

Let’s imagine a startup that has just raised funding. In your opinion, where should they start their work with Webmate: with aggressive PPC marketing or a deep technical website audit?
There is no silver bullet when it comes to advertising channels; each serves a specific purpose. It all depends on the business model: B2B, B2C, D2C, and so on. Each requires a tailored mix of marketing tools that are traditionally proven to work in that space.
Sometimes, it’s best not to start with marketing at all, but rather to design targeted outreach sequences and contact potential clients directly.

Is animated video for products a must-have element today, or just a nice bonus? How does your video production help complex tech solutions "reach" the end consumer?
Frankly speaking, this segment has taken a massive hit recently. As expected, AI tools have practically killed it.
Why would anyone need a designer to hand-draw every single frame in an era when platforms like Zeely.ai exist?
By the way, I actually invested in it! :)

What is the main impact Webmate wants to leave on the Ukrainian ecosystem in 5 years? Do you aim to become an "incubator of successful launches" for Techosystem members?
Yes, Webmate’s goal is to become a trusted growth partner for the startup industry.
We aim to be a flexible, experiment-ready hub of marketing expertise.

How do you see the evolution of SEO and PPC in the era of artificial intelligence? Are you already preparing your clients for the fact that tomorrow's search is not a list of links, but a conversation with an AI agent?
Of course, the transformation from "manual" advertising tools to fully automated campaigns has been underway for years. Even a decade ago, Google told us at their internal conferences that they were heading down the path of complete automation for advertising tools.

Frankly speaking, this process isn't moving as fast as they envisioned. However, today we truly see many campaign types, like Performance Max in Google Ads, operating on autopilot and generating high-quality conversions. Granted, this still comes with many conditions and nuances, such as correctly configuring the target goals we "feed" it as priorities.

So, while paid campaigns are becoming automated, optimization for SEO or LLMs (Large Language Models) still demands a lot of manual effort and analysis. Because of this, I see professionals—especially senior-level talent—remaining in high demand for a long time. Yes, their work will transform from granular routine tasks to a holistic understanding of marketing, but they will be essential to our clients.

In fact, it feels like AI doesn't simplify marketing; on the contrary, it complicates it.

Instead of managing 5–7 services, you now need to navigate an entire zoo of software and possess the deep expertise to use them effectively.

What advice would you give to a novice founder with a limited marketing budget: what should they absolutely never skimp on, and what can be postponed to the "post-Seed round" stage?
The advice is simple, and it's as old as time: you need to know your customer inside out.
At the very beginning of a business, you must figure out how to reach your target audience and sell them your product or service for a symbolic $100. Find the segment of people or businesses that are genuinely ready to vote for your product with their wallets, and study them deeply. Once you possess this knowledge, finding the right advertising channels becomes a much more straightforward task.

Webmate is more than a service partner. It is a team that understood the key truth of the startup ecosystem: success doesn't go to those who spend the most on advertising — it goes to those who first find the channel that actually works. Combining the discipline of a mature agency with the adventurousness of a startup, Webmate has become one of the few players in the market who speak both the founder's language and the language of data with equal fluency. That is precisely why Techosystem is proud to have Webmate as an official Service Partner — and recommends them to anyone seeking to turn a marketing budget into measurable, scalable growth.
